Structure in the Garden

Winter Brings Out Garden Bones

Winter snow casts the structural elements of the garden in high relief.

The first significant snow has fallen here this morning. As my sons and I admired the half dollar-sized snowflakes drifting toward the ground, we couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast between soft fluffy drifts and skeletal garden remains. The grass blades are still green, and as my son remarked, “Look like a thousand thorns poking through the snow.” I’m glad I overseeded my lawn this fall, as I know that my lawn will look green and lush come first spring thaw.
